National Constitution Center - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Architect: Pei Cobb Freed & Partners
The National Constitution Center project was mandated by Congress as a cultural facility to provide a site to celebrate and educate the public about the nation’s most important “living” covenant. Interactive displays, auditoria, and a lobby space facing the mall in Philadelphia, captivate visitors of all ages. The entrance hall features one of each state’s flag hanging from a semi-circular track with embedded lighting elements that ensure regular, unobtrusive lighting for each individual flag. Providing a soft, shadowless light during both daytime and nighttime hours, is an inverted pyramidal skylight. In order to ensure even lighting over all hours of the day, fabric originally intended for outdoor signage displays was stretched across the opening with fluorescent lamps embedded behind. The fabric softens the strength of the natural light during the day and softens the effects of the fluorescent light at night.
