Taschen Flagship - SOHO, New York
Design Architect: STARCK Network Record Architect: thread collective / normal design The Taschen bookstore in Soho features Philippe Starck-designed stand alone book cases topped with flat panel monitors and display tables that seem to float above the concrete floor. Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes created vibrant psychedelic floor to ceiling murals. One lighting challenge in the store was to integrate fixtures into the custom bookshelves after they were already in place at the store. Originally designed for use in Europe, lighting fixtures in the skylight were carefully re-manufactured to comply with domestic electrical codes. In the skylight a combination of HID and AR111 lamps create maximum versatility for the use of the space below. From book signings and parties to art reviews to the typical retail functions the lighting can be adjusted to appropriately accomodate a wide variety of functions. An additional challenge was presented by the artwork stretching from floor to ceiling preventing the use of any wall-mounted fixtures. In this store, everything but the books and custom furniture is concealed. In conjunction with the recessed accent lighting, semi-recessed framing projectors were installed in the center of the space allowing the light to exactly frame specific objects below.
