This corporate lobby in Midtown Manhattan ushers clients to legal and professional offices located in the tower above. The quiet sophistication of the space lies in part in the carefully orchestrated lighting at the pillars running full length behind the reception desk. Just as the color temperature of natural daylight shifts, beginning with cool tones in the morning and slowly warming up as the day progresses, the blend of fluorescent and incandescent light sources hidden behind the pillars is programmed to start the morning with invigorating cool white light and transform into a soft, warm luminosity.

The understated choreography of the color temperatures eases the transition between interior and exterior. With this simple concept the lobby becomes a mediating zone, a space where the crisp geometry of the built environment is livened by the organic fluidity of white light.
