Trinity Real Estate - IT Department - NY, New York
Interior Architect : Gertler & Wente Architects As the entire real estate industry moves into the digital realm, Trinity Real Estate realized that it could be most effective if it moved its IT staff onto an entire floor where they would have space to work and space to grow. Because the technology needs of the company were projected to change, the space designed emphasized flexibility. The same area would be filled sometimes with small work discussions at round tables, medium-sized groups facing a projected image, and maybe a few years on, an expansion of the open office plan with additional desks. General lighting at the perimeter allowed for flexible space arrangements but would have left the space without a point of focus or ‘punctum’ following Susan Sontag’s language. A row of large columns in the center of the space that might have been seen as a bulky design challenge became focal points defining each sub-cluster of desks. The lighting design dramatized these columns, which helped to establish them as the keepers of spatial rhythm. In the final layout, these columns help to break the space into human-scale units, enlivening the repetitive quality that tends to accompany open offices like this one.
