322 Central Park West - NYC, NYArchitect: Plain Space This family residence overlooks New York’s Central Park with unobstructed views of the lake and the full length of the park. The pre-war apartment had low ceilings and a many-roomed cellular layout. The architect’s challenge was to create flowing open spaces out of the existing compartmentalized collection of rooms.
As lighting designers, our challenge was to maintain the sense of spaciousness in the overhead condition by creating an expansive sensibility at the ceiling. Our design maximizes the ceiling heights by integrating elegantly sloping coves throughout. This provides ambient fluorescent light and utilizes the maximum possible height of the ceiling. Ceiling coves over the center of the living room are subtly slanted, providing an unobstrusive ambient light level while recessed accent lights draw the gaze towards works of art and can act alone to provide lower, warmer light levels for relaxation and conversation. The main hallway connecting the kitchen, living space, and bedrooms is warmly illuminated by a cove floating overhead and the soft penetration of daylight through the custom wood and illuminated onyx wall that unites the entire space allowing natural light into the depths of the apartment. |
