This 4,000 sq. ft. commercial loft in Lower Manhattan was converted into an open, bright and airy residence for a young family who owns an advertisement company. As well as resting and rejuvenating here, they also like to entertain guests. Having translucent partition walls and doors maintains an open and bright atmosphere with light passing through gently, while keeping the private space discreetly divided from the public space. The light sources were carefully selected and placed for the required multiple functions of the space, and detailed precisely so that the sources themselves are never visible. By using inexpensive light sources with precise placement details, the translucent partition walls and doors were able to function not only as dividers but also as surface stages for shadow-play adding another dimension of visual interest in the space by evoking the forms and activity beyond.
